Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region
Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region is one of the longest-running consecutive juried regional exhibitions in the nation. Founded in 1936 by the Albany Institute of History & Art, it is considered to be a benchmark for contemporary artists working within a 100 mile radius of the Capital Region. The exhibition is the shared responsibility of the Albany Institute of History & Art and the University at Albany Art Museum.

Throughout its history, the Regional has reflected the depth and vitality of current art practice in the upper Hudson Valley, as well as the vision of its jurors. Each year an outstanding artist, critic or curator is asked to jury the exhibition – no small feat given that hundreds of artists submit their work for consideration. From renowned artists to esteemed museum curators – Edward Hopper, artist, (1936), John Yau, poet (1990), Dan Cameron, curator (1997), Xu Bing, artist (2000), Ivan Karp, gallerist (2005) and Lilly Wei, critic/curator (2006) – the subjective view of the Regional juror is as illuminating as the artistic talent it brings to light.

Never disappointing, always challenging, the Artists of the Mohawk Hudson Region features exciting new work by both recognized artists and new talent. It engenders broad participation from local artists and is eagerly anticipated as a major area arts event. It celebrates the arts and artists in our community and our region, as well as the contribution the arts make to the economic vitality and quality of life in the region as a whole. A healthy spirit of dialogue and debate surrounds each year’s Regional, generating excitement and enthusiasm that attracts close to thousands of visitors to the exhibition.

Juror’s Awards and Purchase Prizes
Cash awards and purchase prizes are additional incentives for artist participation in the exhibition. Each year over a dozen businesses and individuals contribute awards and purchase prize, adding prestige to both the exhibition and to award recipients. Prizes totaling over $3,500 demonstrate the continued support of area businesses and arts supporters for the exhibition, area artists and the life of art in our community.

Opening Night Artists’ Reception
The regional exhibition open with an artist’s reception and awards ceremony at which purchase prizes and awards are announced for the first time to the artists and the public. It is a n extremely popular and well-attended event, attracting between 350 and 400 artists, members of the media, the arts community, corporate and individual sponsors and the general public.
